The Be Happy in Health! series is a brief introduction to the mind, glands and hormones and how they relate to human psychology and health. A few simple techniques are introduced here. See the eBook for the full system. The Second CakraThe second cakra at the level of the genitals is known as the Fluidal Plexus and controls the liquid factor of the body. It itself is controlled by the Subtle (Subconscious) Mind. The liquid factor is associated with the sense of taste. The tongue can only sense the taste of food if it's at least partially in liquid form. This plexus is associated with the reproductive glands the testes in males and ovaries in females. The hormone testosterone from the testes converts lymph into semen and creates the male characteristics. Estrogen from the ovaries prepares the uterus for conception and creates the female characteristics. Another hormone secreted by the ovaries progesterone plays a part in the development of the fetus and childbirth. The production of sperm in males and ova (eggs) in females is controlled by hormones secreted from the Pituitary Gland in the brain. The normal secretion of reproductive hormones not only creates the typical male and female characteristics and sexual desire, but also the sense of duty and responsibility in the mind. Believe it or not, intelligence is also developed by these hormones! A higher than normal secretion gives the faculty of rationality and the feeling of universalism in the mind. A lower than normal secretion causes cruelty and the tendency to support irrational dogmatic ideas. There is an asana which works directly in controlling the glands and hormone secretions associated with this plexus. It's called the Cowshead.
Healthy Hints:Care of the body at this level involves the use of water, both internally and externally. External cleanliness is important, not only for health and hygiene but also because it makes the mind feel refreshed. The body is the temple of the mind, so it should be kept clean just like a temple. The Aztecs used to bathe in cold water every day, right from the first day of their lives, and physically they had very strong constitutions. Remember the half-bath! It stimulates the Dive Reflex (decreased respiration, heart rate and metabolism), cools the organs (via the nerves), cools the brain (via the optic nerves), strengthens and cleans the eyes, cleans the mouth, nose and throat, and calms and refreshes the mind. Do the half-bath before meditation, asanas, food and sleep to cool the body and detach the mind from the sensory and motor organs:
(Note that it's very beneficial to pour a bit of cold water over the urinary organ whenever you urinate not just when doing the half-bath.)
To increase the cleansing effect of water it's best to squeeze lemon juice into it and add a pinch of salt to neutralize the acidity. Drink a glass regularly throughout the day with a positive mind. The way you think while you're eating and drinking will affect the cells and molecules of what you ingest. That will in turn affect your body and mind. It's best not to drink while standing up or while eating. Better to drink 10 minutes or so before you eat, and wait an hour or so afterwards before you drink again.
